Cookie Policy

Cookies are small text files that websites place on your device to store information. Similar technologies (like local storage) work the same way. This Cookie Policy explains how metItem uses cookies on metitem.com.

Essential cookies

These are required for the Service to work. They include the sign-in tokens Amazon Cognito gives you, kept in your browser's local storage; a cookie that remembers whether you collapsed the side menu; and a small amount of local storage that remembers your layout preferences (such as which view you chose on the Items tab) and how you last signed in on this device. When you search for items from the search box, the text you typed is kept for a moment in session storage, and deleted as soon as the search page reads it. The search page also keeps it with that page in your browser's history for the tab, so that Back and Forward show it again. You can't opt out of essential cookies and still use the Service.

Analytics

We use PostHog to understand how the Service is used so we can fix bugs and improve features. PostHog stores a random identifier for your browser, and an ID for your current visit, in your browser's local storage and session storage. It uses a cookie only if local storage is not available. When you sign in, we link this identifier to your metItem account, and we send PostHog your user ID, account ID, name, and email address. After that, what you do on our website is linked to your account, and PostHog can also link your earlier activity in the same browser to it. We don't use this for advertising, and we don't share the data with ad networks. Our website turns off PostHog's surveys, product tours, and chat. If your browser sends a "Do Not Track" signal, none of this happens (see section 3).

PostHog also records anonymised sessions on our public pages only (marketing pages, sign-up and sign-in) so we can see where people get stuck. Anything you type into a form field is masked and never recorded, recordings are deleted after 30 days, and we never record sessions inside the app once you are signed in. Third-party integration cookies

When you choose to connect a third-party integration (for example, QuickBooks, Slack, or Microsoft Teams), those services may set their own cookies as part of the sign-in flow. Those are governed by their own cookie policies.

Most browsers let you block or delete cookies through their settings. Note that if you block essential cookies, the Service won't work correctly — for example, you won't be able to stay signed in.

Do Not Track

If your browser sends a "Do Not Track" signal, our website turns off PostHog analytics for that browser:

• PostHog sends no analytics events from your browser. This includes page views, sign-up and other usage events, and error reports.
• PostHog does not record your session.
• We do not link your browser to your metItem account in PostHog. Your user ID, account ID, name, and email address are not sent to PostHog from our website.
• PostHog keeps no identifier in your browser (with one exception, below): nothing in local storage, nothing in session storage, and no cookie. Its data lasts only while the page is open.
• If PostHog saved an identifier in your browser before you turned on Do Not Track, it is deleted the next time one of our pages loads. It is replaced by a new random ID before any request is sent, so it is not sent. One exception: in a tab that was already open before you turned on Do Not Track, PostHog's ID for that tab can stay in session storage until you close the tab. It is not sent.

Even with Do Not Track on, your browser still makes some requests to PostHog, through our server at metitem.com/ingest:

• It downloads PostHog's settings file for our website and some of PostHog's own script files.
• It asks PostHog for feature flags (settings that turn parts of our website on or off): about once each time a page loads, every 5 minutes while the tab is visible, and when you sign out. In the request itself, it sends our public PostHog project key, a random ID that is made new each time a page loads, and your browser's time zone. It does not send your account details or the ID PostHog saved for your browser before.
• Like any request your browser makes, each of these requests also carries your IP address, your browser's user agent, the address of the page you are on, and any cookies set on metitem.com, and our server can pass them on to PostHog.

Do Not Track does not cover these:

• Global Privacy Control (GPC). Our website does not respond to this signal.
• Our mobile apps. Do Not Track is a browser setting, and it does not change the analytics in our mobile apps.

Not every browser offers Do Not Track. Chrome and Microsoft Edge have a setting to send Do Not Track requests, and it is off by default. Safari no longer sends it (since Safari 12.1), and Firefox removed its setting in version 135. If your browser does not offer it, you can ask us to delete the analytics data linked to your account by emailing privacy@metitem.com.

We may update this Cookie Policy as our use of cookies evolves. If we make material changes, we will give you reasonable notice before the change takes effect.
